Growing without noticing: when everything changes slowly

Some changes are loud. Others show up quietly, almost without asking permission. There’s no exact moment where you can point and say “that’s when it happened.” You just stop, at some point, and realize something’s different. The way you react to things. The way you let go without overthinking it anymore.

And you catch yourself wondering, “When did all of this even start?”

The beauty of routine: finding the beauty in everyday life

For a long time, I thought beauty lived in the exceptions in the extraordinary. In spontaneous trips, in change, in those moments that break up everyday life and make you feel alive. Everything else, to me, was just a phase to get through, something to wait out until something more interesting came along, like real life only started later, once I had my ticket in hand.

Then, without even noticing, I started shifting my perspective. Maybe because my days got fuller. Maybe because I started needing to slow down. Or maybe I just started paying closer attention. Instead of treating stability as something to get past, I started wondering if maybe a different kind of beauty was hiding inside it all along.

Routine, seen from a different angle

There’s this common idea that routine is limiting that it makes every day blur together and leaves no room for spontaneity. For me, it always felt like the price you paid for a stable but boring life.

But over time, it turned into the exact opposite. Having a routine means having anchors, small certainties you don’t have to question every single day. And instead of taking away freedom, that actually creates it. It frees you from the exhaustion of constantly deciding everything, and leaves you more mental space and energy for what really matters.

It’s like having a stable base, a home. Not a place that holds you back, but one that lets you move more freely, without always feeling like you’re on shaky ground. I learned this the hard way, changing apartments every week, countries every month, continents within days. My routine became my stability, no matter which corner of the world I happened to call home at the time.

More happens in the details than we think

There are gestures we repeat every single day, ones I did on autopilot for the longest time without even noticing. Morning coffee. The light coming through the window. The moment I get ready before starting work. A playlist playing in the background while I do something else. A book before bed.

Tiny details. Almost invisible. And exactly because of that, easy to overlook.

Then I started slowing down, even just a little, and actually paying attention. And that’s when I realized those moments weren’t so trivial after all. Not because they’re extraordinary, but because they become full the moment you actually live them.

The poetry is in the way you look at things

The truth is, routine on its own is neither beautiful nor boring. It’s neutral. It’s just the space where most of our life actually happens. Our comfort zone. Our safe space.

What changes everything is the lens you look at it through. If you move through it distracted, it slips by without leaving a trace. But if you start pausing, even just a beat longer, it fills up with details, feelings, small moments you never noticed before.

And maybe that’s exactly the point: the magic isn’t only in the big changes or the extraordinary moments it’s in the things that repeat, day after day. Sometimes all it takes is slowing down a little to notice, and to realize you don’t need to wait for something different to feel good. Sometimes you just need to look a little closer at what’s already there.

For me, it’s never come easy I always want something more, something I assume is better. But I’m learning that it’s the small things that build our memories, and that eventually let us go on to do bigger things.
