August is the month of suitcases splayed open on the bed, group chats finally agreeing on a destination, and alarms set before sunrise to catch a flight. It’s also, though, the trickiest month to travel.

Higher prices, packed beaches, crowded airports, and the feeling that the entire world had the exact same idea as you. And yet, if you look just a little past the obvious destinations, August can actually turn out to be the perfect time to travel. For me, I’ll admit, it’s a bit of a nightmare.

There are islands where the wind makes summer genuinely pleasant, mountains that smell like forest, scenic roads made for driving slowly, and places so far removed they make you forget the calendar even exists.

If you’re looking for some summer vacation inspiration, here are ten destinations that, for very different reasons, are genuinely worth experiencing in August.

Madeira, Portugal

Madeira is one of those islands that manages to please everyone.

Hikers will find hundreds of miles of trails, beach lovers can swim in the volcanic natural pools, and anyone who’d rather just relax can sit by the ocean with a glass of local wine.

In August, the temperatures are pleasant, almost never excessive, which means you can explore the island without dealing with typical Mediterranean heat.

One of the best experiences is walking one of the many levadas the old irrigation channels that cut through forests, valleys, and mountains, offering some of the most breathtaking hikes in Europe. Madeira is the perfect trip for anyone who just can’t choose between the mountains and the sea.

The Dolomites, Italy

Every summer I promise myself I’ll go back to the Dolomites. Because some places don’t need to be exotic to leave you speechless.

In August, the meadows are still lush and green, the mountain huts are open, and the long days let you tackle hikes at every level.

Whether you choose Lake Braies, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Alpe di Siusi, or some lesser-known valley, the feeling is always the same: breathing suddenly feels easier.

My tip: head out early in the morning. Not just to beat the crowded parking lots, but because the mountains at dawn have an atmosphere that’s genuinely hard to forget.

Slovenia

Slovenia is one of those countries that keeps surprising you.

Within just a few hours, you can go from elegant cities like Ljubljana to alpine lakes, forests, gorges, and mountains. Everyone knows Lake Bled, but if you’re after a bit more peace and quiet, head over to Lake Bohinj, where tourism is much lighter and nature still seems to have the upper hand.

In August, it’s a perfect destination for mixing hikes, lake swims, and days outdoors without dealing with overly high temperatures. It’s also one of the easiest trips to organize from Italy.

Scotland

The Highlands feel endless, castles pop up out of nowhere along the road, and the weather shifts constantly, painting a different sky every time you look up.

August is the ideal month for a road trip: the days are still long, and a lot of the scenic routes are at their absolute best.

Bring a waterproof jacket regardless. In Scotland, it’s basically part of the standard carry-on.

Lofoten Islands, Norway

The Lofoten Islands are one of the rare destinations that genuinely exceed expectations. I’ve never actually been, but I’ve read a lot about them.

Mountains plunging straight into the sea, brilliant white beaches, tiny fishing villages, and light that seems to never quite end.

In August, the weather is perfect for hikes, kayaking, and road trips along one of the most beautiful coastal roads in the world. It’s the kind of place that doesn’t need big attractions. You just need to look around.

Namibia

If you’re after something completely different from the classic summer vacation, Namibia is one of the most incredible experiences out there.

August lines up with dry season, the best time to visit the country and spot wildlife in its major national parks.

The red dunes of Sossusvlei, the Namib Desert, and Etosha National Park offer landscapes that feel like they belong on another planet.

The distances are long, but that’s exactly the point. Namibia is a trip you experience slowly, mile by mile.

Flores and Komodo, Indonesia

While Bali is well known to just about everyone by now, Flores still holds onto a much more authentic soul.

From here, you can take excursions out to Komodo National Park, famous for its dragons, but even more so for its absolutely breathtaking sea.

Snorkeling with manta rays, pink sand beaches, deserted islands, and endless sunsets. August is one of the best months to visit this part of Indonesia, thanks to the dry climate and generally calmer seas.

Madagascar

Madagascar is one of those trips that feels like it packs in a dozen different worlds.

Giant baobab trees, tropical forests, lemurs, untouched beaches, and villages where time seems to have stopped completely.

In August, the weather is pleasant and dry across most of the country, making it easier to get around. It’s a destination that takes a bit of planning, but it rewards every single mile.

Western Canada

Canada occidentale

Anyone who loves nature should visit Alberta and British Columbia at least once.

In August, the trails are fully open, the lakes take on that almost unreal turquoise color, and wildlife is easier to spot.

Banff and Jasper are the big names, but the real beauty of Western Canada is the journey between parks. Those endless roads where every turn reveals a completely different view.

French Polynesia

Some trips feel like they belong in the “dream” category. French Polynesia is one of them. At least in mine.

Crystal-clear lagoons, overwater bungalows, volcanic mountains, and a rhythm that seems entirely disconnected from the rest of the world. August is one of the best months to visit, thanks to drier weather and pleasant temperatures.

It’s definitely not a budget-friendly destination. But there are places that, just by imagining them, are enough to send your mind on a trip of its own.

Maybe August isn’t the easiest month to travel.

But it’s the one that reminds us of something more than any other: getting away doesn’t always mean going far. Sometimes all it takes is changing the scenery, slowing your pace, and giving yourself a few days somewhere that lets you breathe a little easier.

And if I had to pick just one destination from this list? I honestly couldn’t. Luckily, dreams don’t come with a baggage limit.
